Nice, especially with the silver/orange/black units!

Snow pig! That is an amazing shot. Why did WP opt for round housings for the headlight vs thre rectangular, more standard housing?

For some readon WP ordered many units with "golden glow" style headlights with the large reflector and single bulb. Later they got inserts that held twin sealed beam lights.

I believe all WP geeps were origiinally ordered/delivered with the single big round headlights, then converted to dual headlights later, thus the round housings. Photo is of New GP-35's in 1963.

(Photo-of-photo) is from "Western Pacific Trackside with Bob Larson" book.

I believe it had to do with re-using trade in parts off the F units.m

WP loved those big round headlights.  There were used on all WP diesels up to the second order of GP40s (3511-3516) delivered in spring 1968, except for the WP's first GE's (U30B 751-755, later 3051-3055) delivered in the fall of 1967.

Starting with U30Bs 756-759 (3056-3059) in the fall of 1968, the road went with the regular sealed beam lights.

valmont,

Your info is correct. I shot the view you posted just west of Echo, UT. Here is the train shortly after that with, a following UP train stopping as well. One of the trains got a unit off the other for additional power.
This was in the era non UP power could lead. I got several WP sets with no UP units that year.

The gold Dodge van to the right was my Motel 0, no fee for a nights sleep, more film to shoot that way.

RC equipped SD45 to the left, not very common. Amazing what roamed the rails in those days.
