Some old SP Hogs (2-8-0s)
Author: ssloansjca

Photo 1: SP 2-8-0 3403, Class C-18, at an unknown location, perhaps El Paso, at an unrecorded date. 3403 was built by Baldwin in 1902, builders number 21068 as EP&SW 254. It was vacated and scrapped in 1946.

Photo 2 : Location unknown, likely El Paso, date unknown. SP C-19 2-8-0 3423 was built as EP&SW 274 in 1904 by Baldwin, builder's number 24589. It was renumbered EP&SW 174 then later SP 3423. It was converted to oil in 1930. Retired 1959. In the 1950s this locomotive was photographed by Guy Dunscomb with a whale back tank and had been fully converted to superheated.

Photographer most likely Bill Darrough, from the Darrough Collection. Since negatives were extensively traded it's possible Bill was not the photographer. Photos from this collection have been shared with permission from Jack Darrough, obtained before he died.

More information and comments greatly appreciated.

Nice post, the Consol shots in the fifties were interesting because they showed up in some of the
last places to see SP steam.

My dad, an SP Engineer from 1945 - 1977 always refered to SP 2-8-0s as "hogs" rather than Consolidations. That's why I am using that term.

The SP Hogs are my favorite steam locomotives,
especially the 2720, aka the SD&A(E) 104!

Thanks for the photos.
The first photo is El Paso. The Franklin Mountains are in the background. Note the tender safety chains and the injector water line are not connected.
Photo two is also in El Paso note the 92x number behind the 3423. 3423 is an oil Bruner in the photo converted in 3-8-1930. 3423 would latter get new cylinder castings and other changes including new injectors before retirement.
