Dave Date: 09/22/18 17:52 Re: Prior Too & Last Run of Empire Builder/City of Portland Author: gbmott Really nice! I spent the summer of ‘71 on the Portland Division and rode the EB/NCL Portland connection several times. If you were a pass rider going from Pasco to Portland, you’d get a roomette in the Portland-Spokane sleeper-lounge on the EB train and make sure you had the same roomette on the WB train through to Portland. Doing that meant a really nice dinner in the SP&S diner along the Columbia River and a full night’s sleep. To have just caught the WB in Pasco would have meant a short night. Back then you could do things like that. The SP&S folks did a quality job and it is nice to see those trains again.

Tim Costello Date: 09/23/18 15:31 Re: Prior Too & Last Run of Empire Builder/City of Portland Author: GN599 Very nice! We live in one of the best places in the country for train watching then and now. The equipment has changed and a new generation runs the trains but if you are standing trackside at Stevenson WA you can still count on a friendly wave from a BNSF crew. And I noticed all the road power of the BN and UP have the typical filthyness to them. The passenger varnish on the other hand still has that spit and polished look to it.
