Anything at or near MS Tower is priceless to me, as my first railroad job was there as an operator 50 years ago. Note the crossing has only a crossbuck; 10 or 11 tracks crossed 117th Street near MS and there were no automatic gates nor flashers until about 1967. Just a few feet to the right, out of the picture, was a gateman's shanty. Note also the third J track, along the Whiting Park wall. Soon after it crossed 117th Street behind Rick Burn, it disappeared into the beach sand. Years ago I recall seeing some of it further west along Lake MIchigan, and possibly it went all the way to the Hammond Water Filtration Plant. |
