The Coast Daylight leaving Glendale 1959
Author: photobob

Here's a shot I took back in the Summer of 1959 on a trip to Southern California to visit my cousin in the Chino Prison with my Aunt. Gee if he hadn't of been such a bad seed I never would have gotten this shot from my trusty Argus C-Twenty on ASA10 Kodachrome.

What would the power have been on the front in 1959?  Another outstanding photo.

One of the first signs of the long fall from glory is the absence of the neon Daylight tailsign.

The power in '59 would be  a combination of Es and PAs, or, solid lashups of either builder.

This wasn't exactly the "zenith" of SP passenger service - that occured during WW II and for maybe 5 more years from my recollection as a passenger in those days.
It is a great picture of a great train.

Bill, Things went south quicker on the San Joaquin route than over on the Coast.

Wow! If I had seen that lash-up on a model railroad, I'd have said, "No way!"

Don't know which pic I like better! Great post! Thanks!

Hmmmm, 2 EMD and 2 ALCO units......back in the day, I recall seeing more mixed engine consists than pure matched sets, more so when 4 units were caled for.

Given the 4 units, I'd wager there were more than 18 cars on that day's #98.  Again, this is from recall, but 18 cars seemed to be the "limit" for 3 unit sets.

Those wonderful GS's handled consists up to 22 cars, prior to desielization.

"To visit my cousin in the Chino Prison with my Aunt," So Bob... Was your Aunt in there with him? (You might wanna re-organize that sentence! ) It's kinda like saying "Throw me down the stairs my hat." Anyhow,.Great shot of the old days! I lived in Glendale for the summers of 59 and 60. I spent some time watching trains there too!

That #6039(?)... quite a unique paint scheme.

Edit: I see it was known as the "Halloween" scheme, which existed only in 1958. Between the Black Widow and scarlet/gray....

As bad as the bloody nose was, to me, at least.......that Halloween scheme would have been just plain grotesque.

Should've stayed with the Daylight Paint Scheme, those engines look better in that than the bloody nose scheme!
