Nostalgia & History > The Coast Daylight leaving Glendale 1959Date: 09/23/18 17:31 The Coast Daylight leaving Glendale 1959 Author: photobob Here's a shot I took back in the Summer of 1959 on a trip to Southern California to visit my cousin in the Chino Prison with my Aunt. Gee if he hadn't of been such a bad seed I never would have gotten this shot from my trusty Argus C-Twenty on ASA10 Kodachrome.

Hope your consin appreciated your jail house visit. Glad you used the Kodachrome ASA 10 film-its held up quite well.

Nathan Date: 09/23/18 20:41 Re: The Coast Daylight leaving Glendale 1959 Author: agentatascadero One of the first signs of the long fall from glory is the absence of the neon Daylight tailsign.
The power in '59 would be a combination of Es and PAs, or, solid lashups of either builder. AA Stanford White Carmel Valley, CA Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/24/18 16:29 by agentatascadero. Date: 09/23/18 20:56 Re: The Coast Daylight leaving Glendale 1959 Author: MojaveBill This wasn't exactly the "zenith" of SP passenger service - that occured during WW II and for maybe 5 more years from my recollection as a passenger in those days.
It is a great picture of a great train. Bill Deaver Tehachapi, CA Date: 09/23/18 21:24 Re: The Coast Daylight leaving Glendale 1959 Author: agentatascadero Bill, Things went south quicker on the San Joaquin route than over on the Coast.

Don't know which pic I like better! Great post! Thanks! photobob Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Here's the power that was on the photo I posted of > the Coast Daylight leaving Glendale.. Date: 09/24/18 14:03 Re: The Coast Daylight leaving Glendale 1959 Author: agentatascadero Hmmmm, 2 EMD and 2 ALCO units......back in the day, I recall seeing more mixed engine consists than pure matched sets, more so when 4 units were caled for.
Given the 4 units, I'd wager there were more than 18 cars on that day's #98. Again, this is from recall, but 18 cars seemed to be the "limit" for 3 unit sets. Those wonderful GS's handled consists up to 22 cars, prior to desielization. Was your Aunt in there with him? (You might wanna re-organize that sentence! ) It's kinda like saying "Throw me down the stairs my hat." Anyhow,.Great shot of the old days! I lived in Glendale for the summers of 59 and 60. I spent some time watching trains there too! Date: 09/24/18 14:39 Re: The Coast Daylight leaving Glendale 1959 Author: bodkin6071 That #6039(?)... quite a unique paint scheme.
Edit: I see it was known as the "Halloween" scheme, which existed only in 1958. Between the Black Widow and scarlet/gray.... Edited 4 time(s). Last edit at 09/24/18 14:49 by bodkin6071. AA Stanford White Carmel Valley, CA Date: 09/24/18 21:52 Re: The Coast Daylight leaving Glendale 1959 Author: ProAmtrak Should've stayed with the Daylight Paint Scheme, those engines look better in that than the bloody nose scheme!
