Emery Gulash- ICG #6001 at Wickliffe, KY 1983
Author: bodkin6071

On May 10, 1983 Emery was north of Wickliffe, KY, at the south junction of the old IC northbound main and GM&O southbound main, both of whom shared IC track south to Winford Junction, KY 10 miles away. The GM&O main would tie into the IC again north of here, at Ballard, to cross the Ohio River before leaving the IC for the last time, at North Cairo. Back to the story, GM&O trains would use this as a siding to wait for any imminent IC trains before continuing either north of south.

Emery got a Kodachrome looking at the southern junction, and the assorted signals. Not very long after, ICG freight SE-1, with SD40 #6001 leading, en route to Fulton, Jackson, TN and eventually Birmingham, rolls thru the junction after having received a crew change at North Cairo and crossing the Ohio River. ICG SD40 #6052, one of the ex-RI SD40-2's, and two GM&O SD40's also trail on SE-1.

This location is still pretty much the same in CN days, although the "shack" has long since been torn down, and the ICG vintage signals are now CN issue LED ones. The siding is still in place, now known as "Fillmore" in the CN timetable. The south junction here being known as South Fillmore.

Really like your post.  Wickliffe KY is a really neat place not just for railroading.
Also seeing emery's photos is different; not many are posted on TO.

Really appreciate you sharing both images, Chris. In the first image, right behind Emery was the 'mile long bridge' which headed southward towards Wickliffe. CNIC got their money out of that piling structure before it got replaced in the early 2000's. One of the few bridges I considered a life preserver as PPE. I don't remember what the final speed was on the bridge; the important object was to not look back to see your train swaying with the lateral movement of the bridge. Yep, that structure paid for itself.
Once the bridge projects between Wickliffe and Ballard were completed, the GM&O trackage was reduced to about two miles of siding at Fillmore. The new mile long bridge lined directly up with the IC trackage at Fillmore, eliminating the bend as Emery captured in the first image. Thanks again for sharing.

Just so happens, I acquired two more of his slides, these of SE-1 on the Mile Long Bridge. He has a string of ballast hoppers on the head end, that would be set out here at Wickliffe. Apparently ICG was fighting some bad flooding around these parts, that the typical spring rains bring with them. The spring of 1983 was no exception.
