3 Neat "Roarin' Elgin" Station Photos -- Rick Burn
Author: MartyBernard

Wikipedia says, "The Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad (CA&E), known colloquially as the "Roarin' Elgin" or the "Great Third Rail", was an interurban railroad that operated passenger and freight service on its line between Chicago and Aurora, Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, and Elgin, Illinois. Wounded by the increased use of automobiles after World War II, the CA&E abruptly ended passenger service in 1957. Freight service was suspended in 1959, and the railroad was officially abandoned in 1961. Most of the right-of-way has since been converted to the Illinois Prairie Path rail trail."

NOTE, before you look at the photos, the snow covers the running rails of the CA&E and what you see are the two 3rd rails.  Rick took these pictures in January 1960, well after abandonment.

Rick lived in Elmhurst, IL where, as he says, "Poplar Avenue [a main north/south street] crossed 4 mainline signaled railroads in about 1 1/2 miles.  The Chicago and NORTH Western (now Union Pacific) ran about 1 miles to the north of these photos and the crossing was 4 signaled tracks including the Proviso Yard lead.  The Chicago GREAT Western ran on the left side of the shelter [in the second photo] and was double tracked.  The Chicago Aurora and Elgin was double tracked as shown in the photos.  The Illinois Central (now Canadian National) ran 3 blocks south of the photos and was single tracked."

York Road was the major stop in Elmhurst.  Two other stops were at Poplar Avenue and Spring Road.

1. CA&E Poplar Ave. Station, Elmhurst, IL in January 1960.  We are looking east.  A contractor in the station was running a neighborhood store and also sold CA&E tickets on commission.

2. CA&E Poplar Ave. Station Shelter, Elmhurst, IL in January 1960.  We are looking east.

3. CA&E York Road Shelter, Elmhurst, IL in January 1960.  We are looking west.

Enjoy,
