Rio Grandes Galore in Carlin, Nevada 9-10-1992
Author: RailRat

Its been awhile since my main PC crashed, so no RR video sharing lately here on TO, had to move hard drives and video programs to #2 PC, So here we go: SP in Carlin Nevada, 2 Westbound trains are here waiting for crews or dispatch, while a 3rd departs west. This is the biggest gathering I ever saw of Rio Grande diesels in my little world, when I used to work and chase along the I-80 corridor, between Wendover and Winnemucca, Nevada, from 1987 to 1995

I made notes on these trains, here they are:

1RORVM 10: SP8246,RG5513,SP7379,RG3132,RG3023 (one or two GP30's!)

1PRRIC 09: Richmond Coal
RG5361,RG5342,SP6852,SP6862,SP7502
(Note SP7502 has new cab and ditch lights, but same old carbody?)

1SNTAC 09:
RG5343,5370,5329,5505,SP8295

The video cuts away to an eastbound UP train on the eastbound track for a moment, then back to the SP in Carlin.

Thanks for looking!

Interesting to see a Jordan spreader cab in the background around 2:30. I had heard they had one out there someone and there it is. That would probably be the Roadmaster model with a shorter frame, not the famous Donner Pass 1962 versions.

Is it just me, or were there more trains running around everywhere before the big UP merger???

There were definitely more SP trains running between Ogden and Sparks back then than what the BNSF currently runs between Provo and Stockton via the trackage rights these days. I think it's still 3 trains-per-week (each way) west of Provo, so how is that fair competition as compared to what the SP was running back then? The SP wasn't running but 10-12 daily trains (counting the 2 Modoc trains) back in 1996, but that's still a lot more train traffic than what the BNSF is running through Carlin these days. The STB "blew it" by not forcing the UP to sell off the DRGW/WP lines after the UP/SP merger was approved in 1996.

Enjoyed the video here of Carlin back in the good ol' days before the merger. Having driven through Carlin many times over the years, the yard as shown here in 1992 is now long gone, with everything removed back in the early 2000s. The old ice shed shown next to the wb train in 4 rail coming up to the crossing was also removed not too long after this video was filmed. Carlin is no longer a railroad town - it's now a miner town due to all of the gold mines in place north of town.

Thanks for the look back, Jim.

Thanks all, for the comments, and SPSF for the history update and stats. yes, back then, there were enough trains running through here, that I could count on at least catching a few on video, without using a scanner, which I couldn't afford anyway.
But there was also a more interesting variety of power both from UP/SP, and especially the borrowed power on the SP!
