Senior year in high school I had a teacher that had several National Geographic from the late 40's and into the mid 50's.  She let students take some if the interested them and I ended up taking a handful home because of the railroad advertisements.  10 years later and I finally get around to scanning a few.  Here are a few that stood out.

1 & 2)  Full two page Canadian Pacific ad for the Canadian.
3) Canadian National

Thanks for those!  I also remember seeing California Zephyr ads in the National Geographic in the early 1960s.
