Nostalgia & History > BB: tracking those C&NW Alcos ....not sure whereDate: 11/18/18 09:06 BB: tracking those C&NW Alcos ....not sure where Author: valmont Bruce loved to head up to Huron, SD and range out along the C&NW to shoot the abundant Alcos that worked that area .... here's one of his many shots, but no info about it. Have any location help? Units are RSD5's #1684 & 1685. I have previously posted a BB shot of this same train but in a different location as identified by TO members.

Does seem to put in the general area that you mentioned. If I find any others in that sequence I'll post info ... This is one of the longest stretches of tangent track in America and still in use by the RCPE. Yup! Over 50 miles! But contrary to popular opinion it's NOT 100% straight. It does bounce up & down a few times. Ok.... considering the condition it was in back in '87, it bounced up & down a gazillion times on a student trip over that stretch. At a mind-numbing TEN MILES PER HOUR... No wonder I marked up on the Wayfreight job at Pierre that nobody else wanted! Lander Wyoming was end of the line. I think I read somewhere they wanted to build into SaltLake City or out to the Pacific in Oregon. But they made an agreement at the time with UP not to continue building. And don't feel bad, Lance, it was that way in the late 60's when I lived in Pierre. Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA |
