Some Baltimore & Ohio scenes and engine photos recorded by Ed Von Nordeck, TO user mundo, during a visit to Willard, OH on October 22-24, 1957.  According to Wikipedia, B&O renumbered their remaining steam with 3-digit numbers in 1956 to clear up 4-digit numbers for diesels, so these locomotives didn't wear the numbers seen here for very long:

1. The view of the coaling facility looking west from Main St. The engine at the far right appears to be 0-8-0 #833.

2. 0-8-0 #867

3. 2-10-2 #517

A few color views at Willard:

4. 0-8-0 #872

5. 4-8-2 #713

6. ...and one diesel shot.  B&O 1437 was an "E8m" built by EMD using trade-in credits and a component or two from a slant-nosed EA locomotive.  I'm guessing the train is westbound No.7 The Shenandoah, but I'm more than open to corrections.

Thanks as always to Ed for sharing his photos with us!

Ed’s photos are a treasure, indeed— thanks for sharing them w/ us Evan!
As a side note, Willard, OH was one of B&O’s last bastions of steam. “Remember when?”— a classic Brad Miller Mobile Fidelity monaural recording features some fine steam sounds. I still have that album — a real collector’s item.

Thanks for the memories.  Several of us spent a couple hours there
in summer, that year, but it was a dark and rainy day.  Got some
decent movies.  Especially liked seeing the former "big sixes," the
2-10-2's.  We were going to return about a month later, but unfortunately,
that never happened.

Thanks again for posting

Impressive group of photos. Hard to pick a favourite. For no really good reason, I like the hedge that is neatly trimmed at the depot. The whole place looks neat as a pin and the hedge just underscores that.

Thanks for sharing.

I agree 100% and if you have any more, please post them.  I love seeing the B&O as I remember it as a child.  Thank you so much.

Sigh..........wouldn't it be nice to just sit in a lawn chair and watch all of this going on around you?   Camera, sandwich and a pop.

Thanks Ed and Evan.

My grandfather was a carman at Willard from about 1919 to 1960, interrupted by the depression and WWII. My mom as a young girl would be tasked to run a thermos of coffee my grandmother made to her dad at the carman's shanty or where ever he was working that night. My mom wondered all over Willard yard. By the time of these photos my mom had started a new life in San Bernardino, California, but she still fondly remembers Willard and still subscribes to the "Willard Times." When I go home to San Bernardino for Thanksgiving I'll show her these photos. She gets very emotional when discussing the Willard of her youth.

Thanks again.
