Gary Date: 11/26/18 07:40 Re: Amtrak 529 Author: santafe199 Love the early roster of an engine I saw and shot many time during my Santa Fe years. Boy howdy, it looks like that plow got into some kind of a nasty altercation...
Lance/199 Date: 11/26/18 08:16 Re: Amtrak 529 Author: knotch8 Never saw the number on the low front side of the carbody, there in the red paint. Also see that the engine appears to be assigned to the Barstow, CA, pool. Did Santa Fe maintain these for Amtrak?
Date: 11/26/18 10:07 Re: Amtrak 529 Author: RRTom How were units swapped out to get to the Barstow shops? Was there a regular routine?
Date: 11/26/18 10:14 Re: Amtrak 529 Author: TT Are you sure that date is correct? Seems like there is a lot of paint missing from the plow and front steps for an engine with such limited time on the road?
Date: 11/26/18 10:45 Re: Amtrak 529 Author: PHall That looks more like a paint adheision problem as in lack of surface preperation.
Date: 11/26/18 12:58 Re: Amtrak 529 Author: refarkas The date Kodak stamped on the slide mount is September 1973, so my date from Mike Ondecker's notes seems right.
Bob Date: 11/26/18 14:42 Re: Amtrak 529 Author: retcsxcfm Unit was built July 1973.Looks like it
had a rough month. Uncle Joe Seffner,Fl. Date: 11/26/18 22:10 Re: Amtrak 529 Author: krm152 Nice roster photo. Looks to me like #529 had a paint problem.
ALLEN Date: 11/27/18 15:06 Re: Amtrak 529 Author: RailThunder I can't remember the whole scenario but there was s time Amtrak swapped out power sets for the Southwest Limtied at Barstow. So they would run LA-Barstow and Chicago-Barstow. This was in the early 70s and it did not last. This would also explain the Barstow insignia.

The 500.s were first delivered in summer 1973-- don't think they even had up to this number yet.from the initial order. This has to be 1974 (or later)-- and the paint looks good, but not FP for sure. Plow would not look like that if it was delivered frest summer 1973! |
