Some Chicago & Northwestern ALCo Road Switchers -- Walt Dunlap
Author: MartyBernard

Walt lived in Rochester, MN (home of the Mayo Clinic) during the 1960s.  The two railroads in town were the Chicago Great Western and the Chicago & North Western.   I have shown you many of Walt's CGW slides and there are many more to come.  But during the next few days I'll post some of his CNW slides.  As you will see, the CNW used ALCo RS-3s and RSD-5s on freights.  Here's six of Dunlap's photos.  And Walt captured the Rochester 400 several times.

1. CNW ALCo RS-3 167 between Rochester and Byron, MN  in September 1965.

2. CNW ALCo RS-3 1615 between 14th and 15th Street, Rochester, MN October 1, 1963.

3. CNW ALCo RS-3 1615 with a westbound Way Freight just west of Highway 52 overpass, Rochester, MN November 29, 1963.

4. CNW ALCo RS-3 1615 with an eastbound Way Freight just west of 7th Ave. NW Crossing, Rochester, MN November 29, 1963.

5. CNW ALCo RSD-5 1688 westbound freight at Rochester, MN note MILW car Wisconsin far right, May 23 1963.

6. And the surprise ending, CNW's Minneapolis & St. Louis Railway X-8 and a probably a CNW RSD5 leading a 21 car CNW way freight eastbound at Rochester, MN on March 13, 1963.  Note: CNW had acquired the M&StL in 1960.

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

RSD-5 #1688 in Photo 5 is an extremely rare unit.
Note the high short hood, nick named a hammerhead.
C&NW only had three #1686 - #1688.
As far as I know, they were the only RSD-5 hammerheads built.
There were five RS-3 hammerheads, four WM and one PRR.
Hammerheads were rare any way you look at it.
Thanks for posting this photo of a most rare unit.

Lehigh Valley RS3 211 is also a member of the rare hammerhead family.

The hammerhead contained a steam generator for passenger service.

LV 211 was originally Pennsylvania 8445.  For those TO members that don;t know, 211 still exists at the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Musuem.  More information can be found here:

I always liked the CNW's Alco power.  Thanks for sharing.

The three C&NW RSD5 Hammerheads had steam generator and dynamic brake equipment in the short hoods.
