A well written trip.    In 1964, I went from Chicago to San Diego and return by train.

Chicago to St. Louis   Illinois Central
St. Louis to Larado    Missouri Pacific
Larado to Mexico City   NdeM
Mexico City to Ciudad Juarez NdeM
Ciudad Juarez to El Paso   Taxi
El Paso to Los Angeles    Southern Pacific
Los Angeles to San Diego   ATSF

Boy does that bring back memories . . . we took the train from Vancouver BC to SF back in 1953 when it was GN to Seattle, NP to Portland and SP to Oakland and then the ferry to SF . my most memorable moment was the articulated dining cars on the SP section . . . we rode coach all the way and at ten years of age, it wasn't that bad re: trying to sleep . . really appreciate you taking all the photos and the back story!
