Was the VTR 501 bought new or is that the former TP&W 304?

VTR purchased SW1500 304 and GP18 600 from the TP&W right before they were absorbed into Santa Fe. One of them (IIRC) was assigned to and lettered for subsidiary Claredon & Pittsford, but not entirely sure which one.
