Bruce Black prowling the Minneapolis area on Mar. 15, 1964 got this shot  .... GP30 #3012 in the lead followed by another GP30 and what appears to be a GP9.

Good looking location! During my summer/fall 1987 stint with the DM&E I spent 2 weeks working out of Waseca, about 80 miles S of Minneapolis. I always had grand plans to seriously explore the Minneapolis/St Paul arena, but never got the chance. I caught on with MRL at their Halloween '87 start up and went west. Had that not happened, I would have definitely transferred to the Waseca crew base. And then the Twin Cities would have been all mine...

That shot is off the Cedar Lake Parkway bridge. The train is westbound heading toward Willmar. That's C&NW's ex-M&StL Cedar Lake Shops in the background. Today it's just single track through here.

it's strange that you can't see more of the GN's Cedar Lake Yard.  must be back around the corner to the left more and the tallest building in minneapolis was the foshay tower located in the middle of the electrical highlines center of the photo.  dave, out.

Another classic shot. The color is fantastic after all these years.

3012 appears to still be in active service as BNSF 2822.

I grew up in St. Paul, though a few years after this photo was taken. I'd always look out the car window on I-35E a few blocks north of here, hoping to see a train.  And I remember them slowly digging those hills down to flat ground in the early 1980s.  This photo gives a little more context to the GN SD45 in orange paint on display just a few blocks from this photo's location at the MInnesota Transportation Museum.
