A couple Amtrak cars at NOUPT -- May 78
Author: gcm

At New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal

(1) 4858 was a 1953 Budd built coach for the Santa Fe.
It was being used on the Panama Limited.

(2) Looks like 8400 was retired and probably for sale.
It was a little unusual - a coach-diner built for the GN in 1950 by ACF for the International trains.

The 8400 (I'm pretty sure it was that car, not the sister car 8401) eventually ended up in the hands of a guy in the Twin Cities area who had been doing a pretty thorough restoration on it over that last 12 years or so.  Then, he up and got married so that was the end of that project, at least for now....

Good catches. I should have taken more passenger car photos, but thanks to those you and other have taken, I can still relive those times.

Is that the one that Minnesota Transportation Museum is now working on?  We got a tour of it about 10 years ago while it was in the shop.

Yes, that's the car.  But it wasn't being worked on by the museum people.  The owner had an arrangement to store it there and he could also work on it as well.

Nice to see the old Santa Fe car still has an intact steam ejector A.C. hidden under those skirts.  She's a real throwback to her younger days in spite of her Amtrak makeup.

In 1978 there was likely an NOUPT switcher hustling cars, too.

According to the Minnesota Transportation Museum's website, the car under restoration there was the #8401. The #8400 shown here is presumed scrapped after a dining room fire in the 80s.
