I grew up in Hammond (Robertsdale) and remember that many grade crossings had guards or watchmen. I believe that this is where an overpass was finally built. Crossing the tracks in downtown Hammond was a nuisance -- you could get stuck by trains for a long time.

Gene Shephard, who seemed to be a railfan, grew up in Hammond Indianna but the book "In God We Trust", from which the movie "A Chirstmas Story" was adapted, takes place in the fictitious town of Hohman Indianna.

I was born in Hammond, Indiana, and lived there until 2000, when we moved to the Sierra foothills, east of Sacramento. Lots of fond memories from watching and photographing trains in Hammond.

I believe it was John Dillinger who once said that if one wanted to rob a bank, don't do it in Hammond, you would not be able to make a fast getaway. Hmm... maybe that's why he went down the street to East Chicago, Indiana instead.... Date: 01/27/19 09:27 Re: Around Chicago, but mostly Hammond, IN, in '80 Author: colehour ghemr Wrote:

At the time, however, that bank (a Walgreen's is now on the site) was between the South Shore and B&O (now CSX) tracks. The South Shore ran down Chicago Avenue until 1956.
