A brand new CB&Q E7A?
Author: valmont

Sure looks like a brand new unit, and if so then this info I found may help date this shot: #9934B was built in May 1949, then BN #9918 and was traded in on September 14, 1970. The lettering on the pickup may say 'A Bower' and definitely says Chicago, IL. I have no idea the year or model of it.

Definitely a new "Q" E7A .. by the cleanliness of the paint, I would say one of the first runs for this unit.

I believe these were geared for a maximum of 117 mph as were the E-5 locomotives.   Thanks for sharing. --Kelly

I don't know.  There was a time when the Q and the fine folks at West Burlington, IA shops kept all of the CB&Q point power locos in tip top shape including fresh paint if necessary.  It could just be well maintained for that era.  Fine photo regardless.

This was part of the CB&Q later orders of the E7's since they have the larger number boards. I would say this probably one of it's early runs

Here is a thread from last week featuring an older Q E7

This photo is also at Downers Grove Main Street. The intertrack fence and the background building match the photo Valmont posted last week.

Looks like it is right off of the shop floor to me. What a sleek looking machine in that paint scheme. Beautiful!

Last of the E7's before E8 production began. I believe NYC may have received the final order. The 45 degree numberboards had been an option since 1946, by now were standard. The pilot type was a newer developemnt with clamshell type coupler cover.

It's been run a little bit. Paint worn off the buffer above the front coupler and evidence of fuel spillage under the fuel cap.
But it still has the front coupler cover which looks "dent free" in this photo.

E7's suffered from prime mover overheating due to the poor design of the cooling system vents. SP and some other roads mitigated this problem by placing baffles in front and behind the colling grid area. It appears that CB&Q did not have such concerns since I never saw any of their E7's so equipped. Of course, CB&Q did not operate in the heat conditions that SP did along the Sunset route, where SP E7's primarily operated.

I dunno, those stainless steel panels on the E-5s made that model the pinnicle of CB&Q  diesel beauty for me.  The E-5 made all subsequent models look, well, ordinary.

That being said, there is NO accounting for taste.

As Information, many of the E7 and E8 units had stainless steel side panels installed by the CB&Q West Burlington Shops. The Burlington then decided to simply have EMD deliver new E8 and E9 units with stainless steel side panels, for a nominal fee of course.

What a joy to the two employees in the cab. You could keep the Kromer white in this new-fangled thing!

That is Downers Grove Main St heading eastbound,,  and judging by that pickup truck it could easily be 1949.
