Nostalgia & History > A really strange flatcarDate: 02/09/19 12:32 A really strange flatcar Author: FT My brother, Ken, always watches cars, even flats, that pass by. He cought this one in Tacoma, WA 4/16/94. It was patched BN, BUT in what looks like GN Big Sky Blue paint, with fulll Northern Pacific
lettering. Any idea on how an NP car got painted in the GN image? Paint looks pretty good for so long after the merger. Keith A (ft) Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/09/19 12:33 by FT. Date: 02/09/19 12:57 Re: A really strange flatcar Author: ts1457 Leftover paint?
Date: 02/09/19 13:17 Re: A really strange flatcar Author: FT Well, as it was an NP car how would it get GN blue?
ft Date: 02/09/19 13:22 Re: A really strange flatcar Author: ctjacks If you blow up the picture, is there a date on it you can read for when it was painted or stenciled?
Date: 02/09/19 14:46 Re: A really strange flatcar Author: FT Here is a crop of the service data. The 4/77 is well after the merger, but still is odd that it was lettered in correct font for NP, with GN blue.

Cushion is spelled incorrectly on the car! Mike Date: 02/09/19 16:44 Re: A really strange flatcar Author: MILW16 No one has commented about the yellow trucks...

Date: 02/09/19 22:36 Re: A really strange flatcar Author: gnfan I think that SM was the code for Hillyard.
Maybe there is a connection to that. Date: 02/10/19 15:59 Re: A really strange flatcar Author: ntharalson The car was probably redone at Hillyard in Spokane whihc, although then on a branch, still did a lot of work. Predessessor roads were often retained on BN cars and I'm
guessing the post on leftover paint is correct. Since NP shops were reasonably close, a former NP employee may have had the correct stencils. A lot of guessing here. Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA Date: 02/10/19 22:32 Re: A really strange flatcar Author: TS735 I’m really hoping somebody can uncover the mystery of this car because I’m sure it has an interesting story. Aside from the odd fact that it was repainted blue and relettered NP well after the merger, I’m sure the fact that it has yellow trucks and yellow barricade stripes on the end are significant. I’m speculating some type of specialized service.

I have photographed it myself at least once. Presumably it was repainted by Havre shops crews after the BN merger. Havre had both former GN and former NP shop personnel so I can understand how it might happen.
