The "Lark"with three miles to go early 1960's
Author: photobob

The San Francisco bound Lark has just left tunnel three and is passing the searchlight signal 3.1 and is heading for two more tunnels and  the end of the line at the Third & Townsend Station. This shot was taken from the Oakdale Ave overpass in much simpler times.

When that great train, which I rode, was a shadow of its former self...

Looks like something is occupying the block ahead up by the tunnel.

I think you're looking clear through Tunnel #2.

How steep was that spur to the right?  That appears to be a steep grade.

The Lark did not always carry the blunt end Pullman cars.  Until the Oakland Lark was discontinued, 1960, I think, the Lark departed SF with a standard Pullman on the rear.  At San Jose the Oakland Lark was switched into the consist, and included a Pullman buffet-lounge observation car, which provided dinner and breakfast service.
