This Doodlebug May Not Look Like a Switch Engine, 1966
Author: MartyBernard

When I found Photo 1 among Roger Patelski's slides I recognized her.  I had taken her photo just months earlier.

1. CB&Q Doodlebug 9769 in September 1966 on the Southern Iowa railroad in Centerville, IA.  She had been purchased after electric operation ended.  Roger Patelski photo

2 and 3. CB&Q 9769 on January 1, 1966 in Clinton, IA on the CB&Q.  Note in the rear photo she had a rear end head light.  Did she have dual controls?  Was the Q using her for switching?  my photos

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

I have seen photos that show the CB&Q using these as switch engines.

No dual controls. Just a horn and a headlight so it could safely back across grade crossings.
Just like a Geep or a switcher.

Amazing what could be done with one two-motored truck for power.
I also kniow that Santa Fe used their Doodlebiugs for switching when neeeded.

I believe that's the radiator, and it has been re-engined. Minnesota Transportatiom Museum in St. Paul has a Q doodlebug in its' collection which IIRC is the 9769, but I can't find it listed on their website. Can anyone else confirm that?

The Burlington Route Historical Society website shows the number as 9735. I found a few pictures from 2015 on rrpicturesarchive.net . It looks like it's stored in one of the sheds at the Minnesota Transportation Museum

Here is the rest of the list for surviving Burlington motor cars
9505 Gas/Mech motor car Craggy Mountain Line  Ashville, NC Being Restored
9507 Gas/Mech motor car Virginia & Truckee RR Virginia City, NV  Operates
9735 Motor car Minnesota Transportation Museum St. Paul, MN Display
9765 Gas/elec. motor car Just north of mainline, east off highway Gladstone, IL Private Prop.

Nice Photos.  Back in 1965 or 66,  my brother and I took a Zephyr out to Macomb, Illinois to take some classes at Western Illinois University.  On the way, I believe we passed through Galesburg, Ill.  and parked there was a CB&Q Doodlebug.   Does anybody recall it being there and what it's number and disposition was ?  I think I have some photos somewhere, but I'll have to dig deep.

Thanks, Craig Hanson
