Seaboard Coast Line Rosters & Data Books
Author: smitty315

Over the last couple years via the internet searches, some contacts with the ACL/SAL historical society, the amazing collection at the Wiregrass Archives at Troy University in Dothan, Alabama, and getting lucky on eBay, and I have managed to find many SCL data books and condensed rosters of equipment.  The Condensed Rosters Of Equipment that I have are:

ACL 6-30-66
SAL 12-31-66
SCL 7-1-67
SCL 6-30-74
SCL 6-30-75
SCL 6-30-76
SCL 6-30-77
SCL 6-30-78
SCL 6-30-79
SCL 6-30-80
SBD 1-1-83

It is my understanding that SCL did not put out a condensed roster between the 1967 and 1974 rosters.

As far as the data books go I have:

Diesel Data Book: 8-8-68 (w/ Wrecking Cranes), 2-13-74, 3-12-75 & 1-30-80
Freight Equipment Data Book No 1 (Boxcar-Caboose) - 7-8-68, 5-10-75, 7-25-79
Freight Equipment Data Book No 2 (Hoppers, Gondolas & Tank Cars) - 3-12-69, 12-26-76, 7-26-79
Freight Equipment Data Book No 3 (Pulpwood-Flat) - 6-25-69, 1-10-77

The dates above for the data books are determined by looking at the most recent date on the "Record of Changes" page in each book.

I have a few projects that I am working so I have a "wish list" of items that will help.  Most would be from 1980 into Seaboard System and Early CSX.

1.  Condensed Rosters Of Equipment from 1981 & 1982 if SCL did them.
2.  Any SCL Data Book revised post 1980.
3.  Any roster or Data Book done by Seaboard System.
4.  Any roster or Data Book done by CSX in the early years (through 1990).
5.  Any SCL locomotive or freight car stenciling diagrams (I have the John Potter scan of the CA-61 book dated 3/24/1972 but it is a rough scan and some of the data is illegible.).

If any of you have anything on my "wish list" or something you think I might be interested in send me a PM.  I'd be more than happy to share what I have in return.

Check out the ACL SAL Historical Society as they have many items that might interest you on the roster and data books.

Some of my scans do come from the ACL/SAL society collection.  So far I have everything they have available.  I have been told by a society member that there could be more in the society archives but they aren't up to date with the cataloging.   I have reached out to CSX as they do have a way for railfans to ask questions on their site but nothing from them as of yet.  I'm sure railfan relations isn't a very high priority or profitable venture.
