N&W 2-6-6-4 1218 -- Roger Patelski

Roger says he chased so many N&W 1218 trips that he can't remember the dates of these photos.  Such a magnificent locomotive, I knew you'd like the photos.  The date is in the late 1980s.

When I was a terminal manager in Oxford, Al in the late 80's the 1218 was enroute from Birmingham to Atlanta when it seized a bearing in Anniston, Al. It spent the night in Anniston for repairs and the next day resumed its trip. We heard 1218 before we saw it at back of my terminal. That is one ground shaking locomotive.

I got to see it in Kansas City, and rode the round trip excursion to Moberly, MO. Must have been around 1990 sometime. I almost didnt go because I didn't know much about N&W steam at the time, but I'm really glad now that I did.

Saw the NW 1218 in Spring City, TN in the Mid-1980's. It did make the ground tremble.

I was lucky to see 1218 a couple of times when an excursion came near my childhood home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. For my very young self, the size of 1218 blew my mind. I've read books about the A's now and understand how much of a superlative machine they are. I do dream of seeing 1218 coming back to life again..... someday. Thanks for sharing these photos.

That third shot is out on the mainline rather than Delaplane, likely the Route 15 bridge in Culpeper, VA.
