Some Tuesday "Blues"

A few Conrail "blues" scanned from slides.

Before the wide cab onslaught, 5 Conrail conventional cab EMD's climb West up the Alleghenies toward Horseshoe Curve.
SD40 6289 & SD45-2 6662 are "helper's ahead" as a long and heavy MOPI (Morrisville-Pittsburgh) struggles to gain altitude.

Altoona, Pennsylvania.
August, 1986.

Conrail's Mail-4 speeds East down the wide 4 track ex-Pennsylvania Railroad mainline.
EMD SD40-2 6397 and a pair of GE B36-7's have already left most of the "heavy lifting" behind and are wasting no time with this high priority train.

Tipton, Pennsylvania.
July, 1988.

It takes horsepower to get the tonnage over the Alleghenies and it was always supplied (PRR, PC, CR and now NS).

At Milepost 248 (West from Philadelphia), a 6,600 horsepower helper set of EMD SD-45-2 6665 & SD40-2 6364 are Eastbound about to roll into the tunnel on their way back to Altoona for another "shove".

On a sweltering day, Conrail's Mail-3H curves West along the Little Juniata River behind a trio of EMD GP40-2's.

There's a cow farm across the river from the mainline and all at once the cows figured it was cooler in the river and stampeded in. Scared the hell out of us.

Spruce Creek, Pennsylvania.
July, 1987.

Now I miss the '80s even more than I did yesterday. Superb series.

Photo two is the straight line between ANTIS and Pinecroft.  Tipton is a ways down closer to Tyrone.

Great photo!
