TOFC, Nope - Road Railers, Nope - What? -- Ed Zarfoss

What is this called?  It's not TOFC (no flat car) or Road Railers.  It's sort of in between.

Thanks Ed,
Marty Bernard

The generic term is "articulated spine cars".

Hello,

ATSF, BN, TTX and others (including IAIS) had variations of these cars at various times.  Although not standard equipment, I believe that similar articulated 3, 5 & 10 platform cars as well as the single-car designs were considered TOFC equipment.

Take care,

Mark

I was always intrigued by these ... articulated to reduce slack action, low tare weight, lower center of gravity vs. a standard pig flat. Seemed like a good idea!

They appear to be the Itel Impack version of the STSF Fuel Foilers? Cool photos!

The most popular (among the railroaders with a sense of humor) were the "6-packs".
Some were indeed sets of six platforms.

That's just TOFC on an articulated spine flatcar.

Such cars are used to this day.

Front Runners were stand-alone cars.  These sure look like Itel Impacks - no?

Ding, Ding, Ding Ding, Ding.   We have a winner.
Just your average TOFC skeleton car.  Usually seen 5 platform articulated.  TTAX, TTRX.   Its basically what almost all TOFC trailers ride on these days.

Never saw one BN green, but that's whats different, as far as I can tell.
