SP's "cans" . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

.   .   .   while looking for slides for the new book, came across this shot. I have took a similar shot of the same train between here and Mojave but didn't remember this one. The eastbound loaded "cans" on a beautiful afternoon at Ansel, CA back in APR '95 *changed*. What an awesome train this was to see and photograph.

Stunning image!   The cans were certainly one of the best shows of railroading!
Are we sure about the date?   By 1998, AC's were the normal power.   Also, nearly impossible to find a tunnel motor that clean...

Date changed to APR '95, and yes, catching a clean motor anywhere in the consist was a rarity, but on the point, counting my blessings!

Sweet photo JB!!  Never had the pleasure of seeing the "cans" myself, although it was a favorite of my father's, as was the area - the lifelong New York resident visited Tehachapi yearly for at least 10 straight years in the 90's-early aughts.

They were said to be the heaviest trains that ever ran over Tehachapi... Was present at the dedication of the Mojave Terminal and still have my coffee cup!
Mojave terminal now used to store asphalt.

I think some of the monster grain trains BNSF runs could be close to the same weight.
