The bad version of the Inter-American - Dec 77
Author: gcm

Bad version for me meant Amfleet cars.
I couldn't believe it that Amfleet had invaded Texas so early - the Lone Star was even still operating.
The Inter-American was one of the first long distance trains to be converted to HEP.
Lost the E units and conventional equipment (most of the time ex-SP).
Of course I still took a few shots.

(1-2) Here is the northbound arriving Cleburne. Not enough converted sleepers to HEP so this train had one every other day or something like that.
The track to the left (and the switch off the main line) was the Santa Fe line to Dallas.

(3) There was usually a boxcar or two at the station for unloading but 3 and possibly 4 this day was the most I had seen there.

Even though the version is bad, the early record shots are good.
Thanks for the photo posting and concise narratives.

Gary,

Nice shots!  Was the Inter-American daily at this time and did it go to ST. Louis or just to Ft. Worth?

Thanks.

All the way to Chicago via St Louis. Still tri-weekly at that time, though.

Winter of 1977 -- wasn't that the year that Chicago had so much freeze damage to cars that the sleeper was discontinued for a while because of car shortage?  For some period back then, 1977 or perhaps 1979??? the train was actually discontinued south of St. Louis for several months because of extreme weather and general incompetence.  We wondered at the time f it would ever come back.  During that period, does anyone recall whether the Fort Worth-Laredo segment continued to operate?
