I'll admit to being a "little" biased, but switchers in full Erie Lackawanna dress were some of the sharpest shifters around during the 70s. Akron, Ohio, August 1976, Conrail but untouched.

Anything EL is a winner ! Sure do miss it.

The guys I knew (ex DL&W) seemed to refer to these as "bob-tails" or just plain switch engines. The Lehigh Valley guys referred to them as pups.

Many times you could tell where a "rail" was from by his terminaology and heaven forbid you used the wrong phrase or terminology with the wrong bunch of guys !

Keep those EL images coming !
 

Sharp paint scheme probably belies deferred maintenance.
Three axles with roller bearings and one with regular (friction) bearings.

Growing up along the Pennsy/PC/CR, Ialways called them shifters. Still recall the first time I was away from home and called them shifters and they looked at me like I was out of my mind. Haven't heard that term in many years. Ben

Biased right along with you old buddy! One of the classiest paint schemes ever applied to a diesel. They look even better now compared to the boring mess in the east these days.

413, later R&N 1000, was scrapped at Pittston a few years ago. As the BM&R's first locomotive, it would have been nice to save it. Oh well.
