She became a "motorette" during WWII when there was a shortage of men for those jobs. Her husband ended up driving a bus when the streetcars were abandoned until his retirement. She was apparently bumped by a man higher on the seniority roster who was returning from the war, but was offered a job driving a bus. She declined, and as I recall she said: "It was too much like driving a car." She liked the streetcars, but not the buses.
