Signal Sunday, BNSF . . .
Author: 3rdswitch

.   .   .   twenty years ago the former Santa Fe main line between Winslow and Gallup was still a left hand running double track ABS railroad. A couple of miles east of Lupton, AZ, a westbound vehicle train was passing one of a myriad of these cantilever signals along the way. Today, this is a two track CTC railroad with aluminum look alike signals replacing the old cantilevers long ago.

Yes. Today's standardization brings new meaning to the phrase "It's All Crap Now."

Excellent shot, JB!  How come there is only a signal for one of the tracks as this train is running left handed?  Seems like the crew could become confused on which track the signal is for.

Thanks for posting!

Great image. Love the old cantilevers and signal bridges along the former Santa Fe.

.   .   .   "How come there is only a signal for one of the tracks as this train is running left handed?  Seems like the crew could become confused on which track the signal is for."   .   .   .
Because, just like UP's main through Weber Canyon, left hand running was normal and specified in the TT. This was also the case for Santa Fe's main over Cajon Pass and Dalies Jct to Gallup pre CTC. This was USUALLY due to grade conditions and double tracking AFTER the original single main track.

Wonderful view!  Signal, consist, scenery all good.

I recall reading that the cantilevers were used so steam engineers could see the signals better when running left handed.
