H.T. Webster was the creator of the character "Caspar Milquetoast" and he did several cartoon series, such as "The Thrill That Comes Once in a Lifetime" of which this is an example.
Clearly he took in details of an actual freight car, or at least a photograph of one.

Looks like "tagging" a railroad car isn't a new phenomenon!
