CB&Q caboose paint scheme ... not one I ever saw but BB did
Author: valmont

Bruce Black took these pics ... pic 1 is @ Denver on 12/5/70 and pic 2 was at Edgemont, SD on 6/25/72. This is a 'curiosity post' ... just figured someone will be able to provide info as to whether there was a special reason for this paint (or just another one that was common and I just missed it!!) and how many there were.

According to "Waycars of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy" by Holbrook and Lorenz the orange paint scheme was only applied in 1954.  BSB

Did someone dump "a cuppa joe" out that cupola window?

Maybe it went to Leadville and somebody got altitude sickness.  A lot of passenger cars on the Central Peru had the same beneath windows.

I find it interesting that CB&Q and AT&SF were among the few roads that called them "waycars". And this Q waycar design is very similar to the standard Santa Fe waycar we all knew, and so many of us loved for decades...

There’s a museum in Minnesota whose name escapes me. It’s been a few years, but they restored one of these orange Q cabooses. I think I even rode on it in an excursion train.

Interesting photos, Vince.

The 13508 has what appears to be white step wells, and a white or silver stripe along the bottom of the carbody.  Neither are present on the 13507.

The 13508 was the regular car on the Deadwood Job into 1974 and I shot it several times.  I did not realize this was a non-standard paint scheme.
When I left the Black Hills in 1977, ex-GN car 10088 still in blue was doing the honors on the Deadwood Job, and the veteran ex-Q crew really liked
it.

The Burlington painted its MOW equipment orange.  When these waycars were painted orange, could it have been the intention that they would be assigned to MOW trains?
