Nostalgia & History > PATCO on the Ben Franklin Bridge, Pretty Spectacular

On October 10, 2012 I was in Camden, NJ with a goal of capturing a PATCO train crossing Ben Franklin Bridge.  (PATCO = Port Authority Transit Corporation)  The line runs from subway in downtown Philadelphia east to Lindenwold (suburban) New Jersey (see map).   A ride across the bridge is outstanding.  Put it on your Bucket List right after Hell Gate and Huey Long.

The 5 photos start as the train leaves Philadelphia.

Next time you visit don't miss walking across the bridge - one of the cheap (free) thrills of Philadelphia! Another great thrill used to be sitting in the front "fireman's" seat for the ride over the bridge, but that's now blocked off. To add to the thrills, if you keep a sharp eye out as the train passes, you'll notice the bridge deck dips about 6".

Thanks, Marty.  At Lindenwold you can get an NJT train to Atlantic City or back to Philadelphia, 30th Street Station.  In Camden you can get a River Line train to Trenton and then SEPTA or Amtrak back to Philadelphia.  Gerry

Neat pix! I've done Septa to Fern Rock Transportation Center, the Broad Street Subway, the Ridge Spur, rode the PATCO train when you could ride the railfan seat to Lindenwald then NJT to 30th Street and back on Septa's Lansdale/Doylestown to Fern Rock. It's fun to make the various circle tours around Philadelphia. 
Interesting was Norristown High Speed Line to 69th Street terminal. Then the Media trolley to the end, walk about 5 blocks to the Septa Media-Elwyn line to 30th Street where you can choose to return to Norristown by heavy rail on the Norristown Line or take the Market-Frankford Subway/EL back to 69th and the high speed Line to Norristown.
