First-rate photos. It's great to see the "Plug" somewhere else than Joliet.

How many times I met the train when I was driving dad's car.
That classic old limestone depot still survives.
Some of the older building in town were made of the limestne block too.
I tip my hat to the town where I was born.
Far enough away from Chicago to be a fairly sleepy town yet close enough to see all the rail traffic headed to the Chcago outlets and eastern railroad connections.
Great memories of the GM&O and AT&SF.

Was the 883A a freight unit that was drafted into somewhat captive commute service?   She has poling pockets on her front is why a ask.   If the 883A is lacking a boiler, what powered the lights and heat on the cars?

Every photo of a GM&O 88x series F3 unit I have ever seen shows a steam generator installed, so 88x series were intended for passenger/commuter service, but could also occasionally show up in freight service.

As to the poling pockets, some railroads were slower than others to get rid of poling pockets.

GM&O was one of very few railroads that got poling pockets on F-units, freight or passenger.  They were also one of the last to get new power with poling pockets: GP38's built in 1971!
