Nostalgia & History > One more for the west...WP was not ignored, just underappreciatedDate: 02/27/20 03:44 One more for the west...WP was not ignored, just underappreciated Author: Roadjob I can't go back east without leaving you with the little green giant of the west, the Western Pacific. In two major trips to California, I had one WP goal, and that was the Feather River Canyon. Going strictly by photos I had seen, it looked like a must see spot, so, I broke away from the SP at Rosevile, Oakland, and Donner, and ventured a little further north to the canyon. Needless to say, to that point it was the most spectacular place i ever watched trains. Later it was eclipsed by Western Canada, but to this day, out of all the places I've been, I'd still put the Feather River Canyon a close second in the wow department. So, before I depart, and go back across the Mississippi, just a short look at a big road when it came to curb appeal. All shots are either 1977 or 1981, and on some, I'm not even going to guess direction, being too far removed from how the railroad bounced from side to side through the canyon. There are also some samplings from the east side of the railroad in Utah.

I spent a chunk of my railfaning days in FRC.
It was common for railfans to wait at James for the usual 2 morning eastbounds, the TOF and BN138 and follow one of them up the canyon. By the early '80's the BN Alco's were long gone but the looming UP "takeover" made following anything with a WP unit leading imperative. The TOF tended to have a WP unit leading and BN138 could have a BN or WP on the point. There was a time I drove Hwy 70, through the canyon, so much I got sick of it. After my parents were nearly involved in a head on collision near Twain I had to think twice before driving that road again. In the next to last photo, the area appears to be near Pulga. However, I don't recognize that small tunnel or shed (seemingly lined by logs) to the left of the small trestle the train is crossing. And I don't believe it is still there. Anyone care to share some background on the interesting tunnel? Thanks much for the Western coverage over the past week, Bill. Rich Date: 02/27/20 07:37 Re: One more for the west...WP was not ignored, just underappreci Author: photobob Some of the finest photos I've seen of the Feather River Canyon. Once again what sets them apart from the rest is the use of B&W.

This is one of the territories I work on but I never grow tired of seeing photos from it, especially from the WP era. Two thumbs up! Thanks much for posting these.

The steel loads are likely going to the USSteel (now POSCO) plant in Pittsburg, CA on the Sacramento Northern line. Z Date: 02/27/20 09:31 Re: One more for the west...WP was not ignored, just underappreci Author: bradleymckay PasadenaSub Wrote:

When Bill visited the WP in early 1981 WP (obviously) had the contract. SP had it in late 1980...I remember them going through Reno.
