Nostalgia & History > Golden Spike tour from Promontory Summit to OgdenDate: 02/28/20 16:31 Golden Spike tour from Promontory Summit to Ogden Author: mkancle Last spring I wandered out west for the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental Railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah. Rather than fight the crowds on celebration day I visited Promontory the day before. The actors were performing their routine and everything was being set up for the upcoming party.
The following tour will take us from Promontory Summit to Ogden, Utah on the day before the Golden Spike ceremony! Date: 02/28/20 16:34 Re: Golden Spike tour from Promontory Summit to Ogden Author: mkancle The first picture shows Mr. Leland Stanford driving in the golden spike. I never would have thought he was that young :)

The Wasatch mountain range can be seen in the distance.
Date: 02/28/20 16:41 Re: Golden Spike tour from Promontory Summit to Ogden Author: mkancle Along Route 83. In middle of the second picture you can barely make out the ROW of the transcontinental railroad.
Date: 02/28/20 16:44 Re: Golden Spike tour from Promontory Summit to Ogden Author: mkancle Now we're in Corrine. This is the end of the line for active Union Pacific railroad tracks that were once part of the transcon. They end unceremoniously in a pile of dirt.

The difference in the amount of people difference is amazing. As Huell Howzer would of said.

Very nice photos. However, UP#844 is NOT a "challenger" as stated in some of your descriptions. #844 is an FEF-3 4-8-4 "Northern". Date: 02/28/20 17:49 Re: Golden Spike tour from Promontory Summit to Ogden Author: mkancle Thanks for letting me know that, Hotwater! I made the correction!
Date: 02/28/20 18:27 Re: Golden Spike tour from Promontory Summit to Ogden Author: captain really nice lighting in your shots. time of day? Capt.
Date: 02/28/20 19:08 Re: Golden Spike tour from Promontory Summit to Ogden Author: mkancle Thanks Captain! They were taken late in the afternoon at Promontory and near sunset at Ogden. The lighting wasn't the greatest at Ogden but I think most of the shots came out OK.
Snow capped mountains always make a nice backdrop. Date: 02/28/20 23:43 Re: Golden Spike tour from Promontory Summit to Ogden Author: Seventyfive Exceptionally interesting set of photos ! Thanks for showing them on TO.
The end of track shot at Corrine is incredible; so much history just sitting there without a salute. Date: 02/29/20 00:06 Re: Golden Spike tour from Promontory Summit to Ogden Author: Odyssey Thank you for sharing the images, the
history, and the celebration of the 150th at Promontory ... nicely presented ... the history and modern images of the UP at Corrine, UT sort of says it all ... what once was critical, now ain't so much ... and it hardly registers on the corporate scale of hey that is UP property ...
