Golden Spike tour from Promontory Summit to Ogden

Last spring I wandered out west for the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental Railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah. Rather than fight the crowds on celebration day I visited Promontory the day before. The actors were performing their routine and everything was being set up for the upcoming party. 
The following tour will take us from Promontory Summit to Ogden, Utah on the day before the Golden Spike ceremony!

The first picture shows Mr. Leland Stanford driving in the golden spike. I never would have thought he was that young :)

Now we're making our way eastbound on State Route 83 towards Ogden. The Wasatch mountain range can be seen in the distance.

Along Route 83. In middle of the second picture you can barely make out the ROW of the transcontinental railroad.

Now we're in Corrine. This is the end of the line for active Union Pacific railroad tracks that were once part of the transcon. They end unceremoniously in a pile of dirt.

The Big Boy and the Northern were parked in Ogden for a few days.

My brother and I rode one of the busses out to the point on the tenth. The difference in the amount of people difference is amazing. As Huell Howzer would of said.

Very nice photos. However, UP#844 is NOT a "challenger" as stated in some of your descriptions. #844 is an FEF-3 4-8-4 "Northern".

Thanks Captain! They were taken late in the afternoon at Promontory and near sunset at Ogden. The lighting wasn't the greatest at Ogden but I think most of the shots came out OK.
Snow capped mountains always make a nice backdrop.

The end of track shot at Corrine is incredible; so much history just sitting

at Promontory ... nicely presented ...
the history and modern images of the UP
at Corrine, UT sort of says it all ... what once
was critical, now ain't so much ... and it hardly
registers on the corporate scale of hey that is
UP property ...
