The Redmond Files... North Yard, January 28, 1979
Author: MaryMcPherson

On January 28, 1979, George stopped by North Yard at Carbondale, Illinois.

1. GP8 #7957 standing by with the car shops in the background.  The headlight placing is unusual on this one.

2. GP35 #627 still in GM&O colors.

3. GP38 #9525 with one of the coal towers in the background.

4. GP40 #3016 coupled to GM&O #635.

5. Another view of #9525 with both of the coal towers.

6. Another view of #635 next to an old passenger car now in company service.

Neat stuff from the great blizzard of 78-79! I may be wrong, but doesn't at least one of those coal(?) towers still stand today? I spent the night in Carbondale a few yew years ago and recorded some Amtrak & CN action. I seem to remember seeing that tower(s) up north of the psgr depot area...

They are both still there.  They were solidly enough built that they would be too much of a pain to take down.
