Thirty Thursday, C&O
Author: cr7998

The C&O had 48 GP30's, numbers 3000-3047, delivered in the "yellow-nose" paint scheme.  The GP30's were vastly outnumbered by GP7's and GP9's, of which C&O had over 500.  In their earlier years the GP30's were most commonly used on the western segments of the C&O, west of Russell, KY, and especially on the former Pere Marquette lines in Michigan and Indiana.  During the 70s, with the consolidation of B&O and C&O operations, the C&O GP30s could show up just about anywhere on the Chessie System.  Here are three examples.

#1  The 3004 teams up with another GP30, B&O 6918, and two other units on a southbound train on B&O's Toledo Division, on the south side of Dayton, Ohio, near West River Road.  Date is May 25, 1974.

#2  The 3011 is at the B&O engine facility at Cincinnati, with B&O GP40-2 4123, on August 3, 1975.

#3  The 3022 was the trailing unit on a westbound train on the C&O of Indiana.  The crew made a set-off at Richmond IN, and in this photo, they are preparing to re-couple to their train.  In the background is the Richmond Ave overpass, and beyond that, a small portion of the ex-PRR bridge over the C&O and the Whitewater River (East Fork) can be seen.  Date is February 11, 1973.  These tracks are gone today.  Most of the C&O of Indiana was abandoned in 1987, and this portion is now part of the Cardinal Greenway Trail between Richmond and Muncie.

Thanks for posting these shots!

I find it interesting the number of people who whine about today's CSX "Dark Future" scheme and forget this C&O scheme,  Change the lettering on the hood and nose and it could be
in use today.
