Nostalgia & History > Warbonnet Wednesday: Super night at NewtonDate: 05/20/20 13:19 Warbonnet Wednesday: Super night at Newton Author: santafe199 TO member “texchief1” asked earlier about shot of westbound Santa Fe FP45s at night in Newton, Kansas. I found this image my friend, the late Tony Fey had edited for another purpose (maybe for Evan??). I have had Tony’s slide collection in my possession since his passing. But I quite simply have not found a way to set aside the massive block of time (2-3 weeks, minimum) I would need to get it completely organized and scanning started. I’m pretty sure the original slide for this image is in with the collection, but haven’t seen it in a preliminary ‘quick peek’. One of these days…
1. From left to right: AT&SF 5932 on 1st train #17, the “El Capitan” all hi-level chair car section(?) and AT&SF 5947 on 2nd train #17, the “Super Chief” all Pullman sleeper section(?) are in the full-service station stop at Newton, KS on December 19, 1970. They are holding to the long standing practice of westbound trains stopping with their noses nearly on Main Street. Image by Tony Fey, enhanced & resized from 900 to 1000 Thanks for looking back! I was on-board #17 of the 22nd December, A roomette, Pine Grove... No Second Section... Date: 05/20/20 15:06 Re: Warbonnet Wednesday: Super night at Newton Author: E25 That sure is a classic scene from a memorable era.
Greg Stadter Phoenix, AZ Date: 05/20/20 15:35 Re: Warbonnet Wednesday: Super night at Newton Author: PasadenaSub Wow, really neat to see an F45 and FP45 side-by-side in the 2 different schemes.
Rich Date: 05/20/20 16:25 Re: Warbonnet Wednesday: Super night at Newton Author: agentatascadero The 12/'69 OG is the closest I have to that date. #15 is due in at 0430, and 17 at 0500.
There is another train visible in the image, presumably an eastbound....18 is due out at 0240. I guess these are the three train shown. AA Stanford White Carmel Valley, CA Date: 05/20/20 16:41 Re: Warbonnet Wednesday: Super night at Newton Author: trainman Fantastic

My post listed the possible trains to match your posting....in the spirit of FYI. What caught my eye was the other train, which received NO mention. So, I conulted ther closest OG, listed the POSSIBLE trains....and made a wording error. I don't suppose you have photos of the rest of the presumed eastbound train, do you? More like another never-ending correction of the OP. > ... the other train, which received NO mention ... Who said it was a train > ... I don't suppose you have photos of the rest of the presumed eastbound train ... As usual with you, not happy with just looking at a neat photo. Gimme more more more! I was in Newton many nights getting on and off the Texas Chief and Lone Star.

And I guess I did have the 2 trains reversed. But... ya can't fault me for trying to put actual Red & Silver on the Super... ;^)
Lance PS: As I was typing out this reply Art called me on the telly. He was with Tony more than one night back in that December '70 time frame. And his notes also showed U30CG leading the Super Chief on another occasion. That started a very loud bell clanging in my memory banks. So I took a peek at my "LFG Threads Posted" file. Right off the bat I found this: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,3154332,3154332#msg-3154332 Even if you're NOT a Santa Fe fan you'll find this link very interesting! :^) Date: 05/20/20 18:42 Re: Warbonnet Wednesday: Super night at Newton Author: texchief1 These are just set out car. Most EB did not end up right at Main St.

And the lineup of both trains puts more icing on the cake! Cowlmendous! Thanks for all the work on putting this material together. Rest in peace, ATSF 5944.
