SP SDP45 3207 leading train 60 at Brisbane

I think this was after CalTrain took over the SP commute service between San Francisco. I forgot what year I took this shot near the old location of the Visitation Tower. I do remember that this was one of the last reguar all Harriman Car trains.

A great photo, Bob.  I believe Caltrain started taking over peninsula operations in 1983, and then started receiving their own F40s and bilevels for push-pull operation in March-May 1985.  Ted Benson had some great photos of the changeover in one of Joe Strapac's SP annuals from the 80s.

I wasted a few hours watching trains from that dirt parking lot that was associated with the tower location. Anyone know what year the tower went away?

Although not a commuter I did have occasions to ride these SP trains. Riding in subs was an exercise in the imagination, trying to have fun and imagine steam, not that huge box-shaped diesel on the point. These cars were rattlers and if you had to ride in a smoker they could be miserable. I wish I could still ride at 70+ mph in what were even back then 70+ year old passenger cars.

Looks like this was down by the entrance to the office complex where Van WAters and Rodgers was located. I wonder when they stopped taking cars.
