A few 40ft boxcars with friction bearings are part of a southbound Katy train on the Galveston Houston & Henderson (at the Henderson part) in Houston.

Wow Gary, neat catches- good choice to "waste" a little film on those boxcars ! I think I miss this as much- maybe more- than the old units. The trains themselves are pretty ho hum these days...

Yes, wow.  Look at all those 40' box cars in 1978 still.  Solid blocks no less.  Just a few year later and scenes like this would be gone.

I'm thinking, well guessing, these were grain loads.  However, it is a nice collection and that Fort Dodge Des Moines and Southern car is a classic catch.

I suspect it was grain being shipped out of Galveston to Russia. That seems to have been the last hurrah for 40 footers coming out of rickety branch lines and ancient small town grain silos.

The 40 Ft. boxcars were fading fast back when you caught that nice group.
Des Moines, Fort Dodge and Southern was icing on the cake.
Thanks for another excellent and unique posting.

Some of the older country elevators could only load 40 foot boxcars.
