More from the Cowl Locker - Southern California
Author: dwatry

Found a bunch more slides of cowl units around Southern California to scan.  Amazing what you can find in your own closet during a pandemic!

1)  Southwest Limited westbound, stopping in San Bernardino in December 1974.
2)  Northbound San Diegan traversing Buena Vista lagoon between Carlsbad and Oceanside in June 1974.  In the background is the Pacific Coast Highway bridge over the Santa Fe.
3)  Southwest Limited heading eastbound along the LA River after having just left LA Union Station in June 1974.    Missed the last rays of sunshine on the train!

That scheme on those particular locos will always be the image of Amtrak for me. Just looks right.

Great group of photos, I really like the last one of #4 heading out onto the Second District before dark.

It's not a closet - It's a treasure chest! First-rate images.

How long did the SDP40F's run on the San Diegan? I don't think it was for very long as I assume it was just between the use of inherited power and the F40PH's arriving.

Pic #1 has one of Santa Fe's detector cars on the track to the right.
That's a great set of photos, I like the small bit of morning fog in SB in the first pic.

Nice photos, thanks for posting. I can relate to them all as this was around the time when I was first getting out shooting a lot of photos in So Cal where I grew up. I especially like the third one of the Southwest. Threw me off at first until I rememeberd that it was still heading for the second district at that time.

Great pics!!  Old Santa Fe Railway LA and Needles based passenger train crews worked between Los Angeles and Needles. LA based engine crews worked to and from Barstow, CA. In all photos.
