A few Amtrak conventional cars
Author: gcm

1) 5699 - An old one - Budd built in 1941 as a parlor car for the NYC and Empire State Express (Levi P. Morton). Amtrak rebuilt the car to a coach in 1973.
Here it is on the Southern Crescent at Birmingham in Dec 78.

2) 2561 Lincoln Park - built by Pullman-Standard in 1954 with 8 roomettes and 6 dbl bedrooms.
Built for the Rock Island (Golden Tower) and the Golden State.
The car was renamed by Amtrak in 1974 for service on the Broadway Limited.
It was also leased by CN in 1966-67.
I just squeezed it in at Washington Union Station in May 78.

3) The car on the left was another old one and one of my favorite Amtrak cars since I rode it plenty of times on the Lone Star.
It is 3380 ex-Santa Fe Picuris - a 1937 Budd built dormitory bar lounge car (built for the Chief).
On its right is 3390 a dormitory lounge car built by P-S in 1950 for the Santa Fe.
These cars are at the New Orleans station in Nov 79.

More nice items of Amtrak history.

I am far from an expert on NYC passenger service, but it's interesting an ex-NYC parlour car made it to see Amtrak.

I’ll second that — and he does exceptional interiors as well!
Only a few did that: most notably Bob Schmidt, Atty from St Louis, and George Strombeck, band director/ author from Rockford— both fellow NWI chapter NRHS members, might I add!

Great work, Gary— do you have a photo of ex-CNO&TP 10-6 slpr “Etowah River”? I rode that from Chicago - Nashville on train #53, the Floridian in Oct 1974.

Here is a rough one posted earlier of the car.
This was on the Lake Shore Limited arriving Cleveland in Dec 76.

Good shots! A good book with a lot of these cars pictured is "Amtrak by the Numbers:"

Randy Lundgren.
