A westbound on the Chicago and North Western Geneva Sub at Sterling, Illinois in 1987 with SD40-2 #6838 on the point.

This was taken at the "Waterworks Curve" with the Rock River in the background.

The double mains hug the north banks of the river along this stretch and the gentleman in the right hand seat is looking straight ahead, maybe anticipating people crossing the tracks to fish.

Perhaps he lit his fresh cigarette at Nelson or after the bridge over the Rock both just east of here.

Post 1988 I shot video almost exclusively, but for a brief time in the mid 1980s it was my brother's hand me down Yashica and mailing off the rolls for processing.

I don't recall the turn-around time, but at least a weeks wait to see how the exposures "turned out".

Looking out over the front porch.
 

Always loved riding the ‘front porch’ on work trains with SD40-2s out to the job site with ballast cars, more often than not long hood forward, on the N&W.  Kind of like a boat at sea if it was still jointed rail.
