More George Washington around Virginia
Author: dwatry

1)  George Washington eastbound at Alexandria VA with B&O E-9 1455 on the point, in December 1972.   Note freight cars in background at RF&P freight houses, where WMATA Metro KIng Street Station is now located.  Note F-unit style number boards on 1455, but not on 1456 (below).  B&O also bought F-unit style pilots on their E-units.
2)  George Washington Newport News section westbound in Newport News with B&O E-9 1456 and a one-car dome consist - perhaps ex-NP?  December 1972.
3)  George Washington Newport News section eastbound at Newport News station with B&O passenger GP-7 6699 and a 2-car consist - a C&O coach and an ex-NP dome (?).  Note the Greyhound PD-4106 peeking out from behind the Geep.  That was the Norfolk connecting bus, which loaded trainside.   New Year's Eve - 12/31/72.

Thanks for these photos of early Amtrak Trains with the E-9 units from the B&O.  These are great photos as Amtrak really struggled to begin passenger service as they were under funded from day one.

Uncle Joe - E-8s 1460-1467 were the former C&O units, not units in the 1450s.  E-9s 1454-1457 were original B&O purchases from EMD.  You can tell by the headlights and the pilots - C&O units had 2 headlights, B&O's had only one, and the former C&O units also had the passenger pilot, like 1471, whereas the B&O units had the freight pilot.  See photo of 1471 below for what a C&O unit looked like.    Check "Baltimore & Ohio E-Unit Diesel Passenger Locomotives" by Douglas B. Nuckles with Thomas W. Dixon Jr. (TLC Publishing-1994) for reference.
