ATSF 3759 trip from LAUPT to Manhattan Beach
Author: wattslocal

 I tried to post these a while back, without much success, so I'll try again.

These are from two trips sponsored by the City of Hermosa Beach, for some celebration.

1.  ATSF 3758 crossing the PE four tracks on Slauson Ave.

2.  ATSF 3758 at Wise Transfer in 1953 on the first trip

3. ATSF 3759 at Wise Transfer in 1954 on the second trip..

Wise Transfer was in El Segundo and was the spot where the PE Watts/El Segundo line crossed the Santa Fe.

At the time of Ray's photos the trains are at Wise Tower, which we see. However, in Pacific Electric employee timetables
going back at least to the 1930's the official name of the interlocking, (the control rods of which some are visible), was simply: 'Wise'.

Wise Transfer was located .6 mile beyond 'Wise', toward the Standard Oil facility. Santa Fe timetables of the
"Harbor District" showed the rail crossing in the photo as "El Segundo" and the signals governing Santa Fe through the crossing
were normally lined for the Santa Fe.

When PE needed to cross, PE train crews were required to "...operate signals in accordance with instructions on chart in tower";
a practice that went back at least as far as its naming.

A major change I hadn't noticed before between the two photos taken at Wise; by 1954 PE had removed the overhead wire. No more electric
operation here.

The 3758 trip took place on October 10, 1953 and ferried riders to the "1912 Days" celebration at Hermosa Beach.  Some background on "1912 Days" can be had here:

The 3759 trip took place on October 9, 1954.  More photos can be seen here:
