My Coal Line Days From the EMD Era

1st   A late afternoon coal train is just a few miles out of Bill, Wyoming with a pair of SD60's, and future MP cousins SD50 #5003 and SD40-2 #6029.  The date is October 12th of 1987.

2nd  An all EMD C&NW consist is hustling empties back noth (west by timetable) near Walker on 8/25/88.

3rd  Coal loads staged at Bill yard on 7/8/88 waiting for track work to end and crews to come on duty to go south.

Really like all the clean CNW SD60s. Fast forward to today and the only unit in any of the pictures still left on the UP is the oldest one of the bunch, MP SD40-2 6029. It survives as UP SD40N 1643.

Bill is the next town north of Douglas on hwy.59,, there aint much there except the yard and a hotel with a diner.  There is also a Progress Rail Car repair shop south of the yard.

Great shots of the 8000's in a seemingly short lived time period for them in the Powder River service. Weren't these the units that undid it for EMD and CNW? They looked great while they were there.

That C&NW yellow paint really looks nicer and brighter than the UP "yellow".  Much, much better appearance.

Agreed-- the C&NW yellow really "pops." The other guys yellow is kinda flat, comparatively.
