Dial "M" for Missabe
Author: SvenMolson

Years ago, I developed a strong like for the Missabe Road.  Several trips and heap of slide trading has given me a decent collection of DM&IR material.  Within the past month, I've made two trips to see the changes made to this once independent ore hauler.  The paint scheme has changed, the SD9's & 18's are long gone.  Even some of the SD40-3's have perished.  Yet, a number soldier on along with imports from the B&LE, CN and IC.  This post is a look back as well as a glimpse of the present day Missabe/CN operation.

Bravo ! The Missabe is one of my favs also. Nothing like the sound of three SD9/18s dragging a limestone train up Proctor Hill or the the sound of dynamics on a loaded ore train coming down the hill to the docks. The brakeshoe smoke smelled just like a foundry.

DMIR 130 in your first photo was one of two (with 129) steam-generator equipped SD-9s they had.  They were recognizable by the split fuel/water tanks.  They were the backup for the Missabe's RDC, then the power for inspection trains.  They even spent time in the late '70s leased to Amtrak during the SDP40 troubles, operating Minneapolis-Duluth.

I remember as a young lad our family vacations from Illinois to upper Minnesota to go fishing.
We would drive to Duluth and spend the night in Bud's Motel on top of Proctor Hill.
I would wake up and look out the window everytime a train went by, all thru the night.
My parents weren't happy about being woke up with my stirring about but they tolerated my interest in trains.

Having lived in Duluth until late 1976. I don't ever remember noticing the Alcos, but at that time in my life the DMIR was just a nuisance to me because my girl friend lived in the west end and I lived up in Piedmont heights area.  I remember blowing through the lights and stop signs on 40th trying to beat the train.  Now I would drag my feet and do anything in hope for a train to come by.  Love the DMIR and really enjoy the pictures especially the rare Alcos.

193 is still dressed in maroon, in service this weekend on the North Shore Scenic Railroad at Duluth.
