SLG&W passenger car 711

Here is a photo of Salt Lake Garfield & Western lounge car 711. It is a former UP lounge car in the 1500-series. Photo by Michael Palmieri, at Salt Lake City on August 11, 1975.

I have a report that the car ended up in Washington state, numbered as SLG&W 100. Can anyone add to the story of this car's disposition?

I can't recall seeing the 100 at Mineral, but in 6/89 I found SLG&W 102 there. It has "The Hogle Line" on the far end. Some connection to the Hogle Zoo,
in SLC I suppose. The SLG&W lettering is really hard to see in light blue, on the near end, on the fluting.

The Hogles were owners of the SLGW at one time.  Huck Hogle was President for ages.

Donald "Huck" Hogle passed away on April 21, 2010, at age 67. Here is a link to his obituary.

The site in Mineral, Washington, is apparently the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad. A newspaper article from 2013 reports that the museum had eight passenger cars.

Where in Mineral is the shop located? I don't see it on Google Earth.

The old saying goes, "If it had been a snake it would have bit me." I wasn't looking for such a large facility.

The former SLG&W 711 might very well be part of the railroad's equipment.

The name USED to be Mt Rainier Scenic. When American Heritage Rys took over in 2016 , it became the Mt Rainier Railroad. I think the line is up for sale again.

SLG&W 711 is the former UP 4052, built as UP Diner 325 in 1929; renumbered to UP 36-seat Diner 3625 in May 1940; remodeled to UP Buffet Lounge 4052 (2nd) in May 1964. Retired by UP in January 1972.

UP 4052 was one of five Buffet Lounge cars converted by UP in 1964 from 3600-series 36-seat Dining cars, which had already been modernized as what some call "Streamlined Heavyweight."

Today in a phone call with a friend, I was told that Hogle was under the impression that he could run a gambling operation, and an over-the-counter liquor service from this railroad car because railroads were under federal ICC jurisdiction, and not subject to State of Utah restrictions of such things. I have not yet found when Hogle sold the car.

Research continues...

I wonder if it's MRSX 481 as shown in this picture. It's definitely a similar car. it's at Mt. Rainier Scenic DINING, a static restaurant operation in Elbe, WA.

Also mentioned in this RYPN thread from 6 years ago.

Google Street View says it's still there as of Sep 2018.
